چکیده

BACKGROUND Many adolescent mothers experience significant challenges in regulating emotions due to adverse life experiences, which can place adolescent mothers and their children at risk for poor developmental outcomes. Ambulatory monitoring of stress that also provides immediate feedback using wearable biosensors has the potential to enhance clinician-delivered parenting interventions and help young mothers develop emotion regulatory skills. METHODS We conducted a pilot study to assess the acceptability, ease of use, and preliminary efficacy of a wearable biosensor, the iCalm sensor band, among a sample of four mothers, ages 15-18 years. Mothers wore the biosensor for a period of 24-36 hours while engaging in normal, daily tasks (e.g. caring for their child, attending school). Both quantitative electrodermal activity (EDA) data (via the iCalm sensor band) and qualitative data (via individual semi-structured interviews) were collected. RESULTS The adolescent mothers were able to comfortably use and wear the iCalm sensor band. EDA data were collected and corresponded with stressful daily life events described by the mothers during qualitative interviews. CONCLUSION The iCalm biosensor is acceptable to use among high-risk adolescent mothers and appears to help mothers with the development of emotion regulatory skills.

Office orthostatic blood pressure measurements and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in the prediction of autonomic dysfunction

BACKGROUND In this retrospective analysis we investigated the predictive performance of orthostatic hypotension (OH) and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABP) to predict autonomic dysfunction. METHODS Statistical associations among the candidate variables were investigated and comparisons of predictive performances were performed using Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curves. R...

Ambulatory recording of within- and between-subject variation in autonomic nervous system activity

The central theme of this thesis was the non-invasive measurement of withinand between-subject variation in autonomic nervous system activity. Reliable and valid noninvasive measures are essential to ambulatory monitoring, which in turn is crucial for the ecologically valid study of the link between biology and behavior. In this final chapter, I first summarize the main results from the laborat...

Repeat pregnancy among urban adolescents: sociodemographic, family, and health factors.

First-time adolescent mothers are at high risk for a repeat pregnancy. The present investigation, part of an ongoing longitudinal study, examined sociodemographic, family, and health factors associated with repeat Pregnancy in a clinic sample of urban, first-time adolescent mothers (ages 13 to 17 years). They were predominantly African-American and from low-income households. Repeat pregnancy w...

Autonomic nervous system activity in patients with Fabry disease

Background: Fabry disease is an inherited, multisystemic and progressive lysosomal storage disorder. The first symptoms of Fabry neuropathy reflect progressive loss of function of both peripheral somatic and autonomic nerve cells. We aimed to evaluate autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in a cohort of patients with Fabry disease. Methods: ANS activity was evaluated by determining heart rate...
